John 13: 31– 35
In his farewell discourse at the Last Supper, Jesus gives his apostles a new commandment. So, what is new about this? Jesus instructs them to “love one another as I have loved you.” The old commandment was “love your neighbor (one another) as yourself.” Jesus increases his expectation through an event that is yet to come, namely, his death on the cross. He will lay down his life for us. Jesus wants us to go above and beyond – and he will do this first. Let us love one another in a sacrificial way, which implies “dying to ourselves.”
