Rabbis often taught under fig trees. Fig trees, therefore, presented one’s relationship to the Lord – one that is righteous or “rightly ordered". These trees often produced a crop four times a year. Therefore, people paid attention to their leaves, buds and ripe figs. Jesus uses the fig tree as a symbol of our spiritual life in Him. He wants us to be attentive and bear fruit in abundance. Jesus mentions the destruction of the Great Temple in Jerusalem. Likewise, our relationship with the Lord can be destroyed if we don’t cultivate it through prayer and works of charity. If we do, we will bear much fruit!
