OPENING OUR CHURCH DOORS! Dear Family, Friends and Parish Community of St. Lawrence of Brindisi – The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has given us permission to re-open the church! It will be done in two phases and requires a plan which must be approved by the regional Bishop, Edward Clark. Phase I will allow us to open the church for private prayer and adoration. Phase II will allow us to celebrate weekday and Sunday Masses. Both phases limit us to no more than 100 people. We are working on the plan now and will submit it next week to Bishop Clark. Memorandum From Bishop Clark OLA Pastoral Region/Archdiocese of Los Angeles RE: Opening of Churches May 22, 2020 The Archbishop has suspended the obligation for each Catholic to receive Communion during the Easter Season. In place of the Easter Duty, Catholics of the Archdiocese are asked to receive Communion as soon as Mass is available to them before the end of the calendar year. The bishops of the California Catholic Conference have engaged the Governor’s staff in regular communication about the plan of the twelve dioceses of California to do a phase-in reopening of churches. We have reiterated that our cooperation with the State’s reopening plans has been a voluntary decision of the Church leaders reserving to ourselves the first amendment freedom of worship rights. Our cooperation is based on our concern and responsibility for the welfare of our people. We have established detailed plans for reopening our churches at our discretion and are requesting the State to honor those plans. We are expecting a response from the Governor this coming week. In the meantime, each parish and school is asked to prepare a phased-in reopening and to (1) develop now a specific plan for your facilities, including maintaining social distance and virus containment practices, a method for welcoming parishioners back to Mass and the sacraments on a limited basis, training volunteers for keeping proper order and monitoring virus containment practices, regularly cleaning the church facilities, communicating regulations and procedures to your parishioners; and (2) gathering the materials you will need for continuous sanitizing of the facilities. Shelter in Place Order / Opening of Churches: Clarification by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez As you know, last week Mayor Garcetti extended the Shelter In Place through July 2020. Therefore, the Archbishop has dispensed Catholics from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until further notice. The Archbishop is looking at different models/stages for re-opening the churches.He will continue to work with the health departments in the Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties to see what options will be available. He said that he must go slowly so as to ensure the health and safety of everyone. All Confirmations has been postponed. The confirming bishop will contact the local pastor to arrange a new date; at that point it will be determined whether the bishop will confirm or if the pastor will be delegated as the confirming priest. (It is my sincere hope/desire that we have a bishop to celebrate this wonderful sacrament.) The other restrictions regarding the celebration of the Sacraments remain in place until further notice. The Archbishop empathizes with all of us as we struggle with the sad consequences of the COVID 19 virus: sickness, loss of life, financial and the suspension of the sacraments. New Date for Church Opening Yesterday, Archbishop Jose Gomez had a zoom conference with the priests of the Archdiocese informing us that churches would be closed until July 31. Parishioners of St. Lawrence of Brindisi are encouraged to drop off a picture of a loved one or friend who may be ill (any disease) so that we can place it on our Marian altar in the church and pray for them.
